Engine Oil Consumption
During typical engine operation, it is common for an engine to use some engine oil. The following are the reasons for oil consumption in a normal engine.
Oil is used to keep pistons, piston rings, and cylinders moving smoothly. When a piston falls in the cylinder, a thin layer of oil remains on the cylinder wall. The high vacuum generated as the vehicle decelerates sucks some of this oil into the combustion chamber. During combustion, this oil as well as part of the oil film left on the cylinder wall are burned by hot combustion gases.
The stems of the engine’s intake valves are also lubricated with oil. Some of this oil is drawn into the combustion chamber, where it is burned along with the petrol. The high-temperature exhaust gases also burn through any oil that has been applied to the exhaust valve stems in order to lubricate them.
Oil consumption: Max. 1.0L per 1000 km (1.1 qts./600 miles, 0.9 Imp. qts./600 miles) When measuring the amount of oil used, consider that the oil may have been diluted, making it difficult to evaluate accurately.
For example, if a car is used for short trips on a regular basis and uses enough oil, the dipstick may not indicate any drop in oil levels even after 1000 km (600 miles) or more.
